Brightside / sample learning resource
Fractions, one step at a time.
Learning goal: recognise halves and quarters, compare simple fractions and find an equivalent fraction.
Before you begin
Use a drawing or small objects if they help. Read each question carefully and explain your thinking. This is a demonstration resource; check suitability before using it with a learner.
The answer key is omitted from the printed question sheet. Your browser may offer “Save as PDF”.

Show the answer key
- 4. Four equal quarters make one whole.
- 2/4. Two of four equal parts cover the same amount as one of two equal parts.
- 2/4, which is the same as 1/2. Add the number of quarters.
- 1/2. When the whole is the same size, one of two equal parts is larger than one of four equal parts.
- 6. Divide 8 into four equal groups of 2, then take three groups: 3 × 2 = 6.
